How the calculation works

Streaming places two separate loads on your PC: gaming (GPU-bound for most games) and encoding (CPU-bound for software x264, GPU-bound for NVENC/AMD). These compete for resources, so hardware requirements increase with both resolution and game demand.

Hardware encoders (NVENC on Nvidia, AMF on AMD) offload encoding from the CPU to a dedicated chip on the GPU. This significantly reduces the CPU requirement and is recommended for most setups. Quality has improved greatly — modern NVENC on RTX 4000 cards matches or exceeds x264 at medium preset.

Software encoding (x264) uses more CPU cycles but can achieve better quality at the same bitrate on older hardware. It's a good choice if you have a high-core-count CPU and a weaker GPU.

Is NVENC better than x264?

On modern GPUs (RTX 3000+), NVENC quality is close to x264 fast/medium preset. On RTX 4000 series, it's competitive with x264 slow. For most streamers, NVENC is the better choice because it frees up CPU headroom for gaming.

Do I need a separate streaming PC?

Only if your single PC can't handle both gaming and encoding simultaneously. A dual-PC setup (gaming PC + capture card + streaming PC) eliminates encoding overhead entirely but requires a significant budget increase.

What's the best bitrate for Twitch?

Twitch caps most streamers at 6,000 Kbps. Partners can apply for Enhanced Broadcasting to reach up to 8,000 Kbps. Going below 4,500 Kbps at 1080p60 will result in noticeable compression artifacts during fast motion.

How much RAM do I need for streaming?

16GB is the minimum for most setups. 32GB is recommended if you run Chrome, Discord, and a chat overlay alongside your game and OBS. Some memory-heavy games (MSFS, Hogwarts) eat 12–16GB alone.

Can I stream on a laptop?

Yes, but thermal throttling is a concern. Laptops tend to throttle both CPU and GPU under sustained dual load. Keep your laptop plugged in, use NVENC, and monitor temperatures in HWiNFO64.
