How the calculation works
Every platform has specific recommended dimensions for profile images, banners, thumbnails, and panels. Using incorrect sizes causes cropping, blurriness, or letter-boxing.
The aspect ratio is calculated as the greatest common divisor (GCD) of width and height — for example, 1920×1080 simplifies to 16:9 because gcd(1920, 1080) = 120, giving 16:9.
For OBS, set your canvas resolution to match your monitor (usually 1920×1080), and set your output resolutionto whatever you're streaming at (can be the same or scaled down).

What canvas resolution should I use in OBS?
Set your base canvas to match your monitor resolution (most commonly 1920×1080 or 2560×1440). Set the output resolution to what you'll actually stream — typically 1920×1080 for 1080p, or 1280×720 for 720p.
What size should Twitch panels be?
Twitch panels are exactly 320px wide. Height is flexible — Twitch will scale them, but 160px is standard (2:1 ratio). You can use up to 320×480px for taller panels like subscriber goals.
Why are YouTube thumbnails 1280×720 and not 1920×1080?
YouTube recommends 1280×720 as the minimum resolution for thumbnails (maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio). While you can upload 1920×1080, YouTube compresses thumbnails heavily, so there's little visible difference.
What aspect ratio is best for TikTok and Instagram Reels?
Both platforms are 9:16 vertical (1080×1920 pixels). If you're clipping stream moments for short-form content, crop or record at this ratio — don't just resize a 16:9 clip.
What's the difference between base canvas and output resolution in OBS?
Base (canvas) resolution is what OBS renders internally — usually your monitor resolution (1920×1080 or 2560×1440). Output resolution is what you actually send to the streaming platform. You can set a 1440p canvas but output at 1080p to add sources at native resolution while streaming at a lower bandwidth cost.
Should I stream at 1080p or 720p?
1080p60 at 6,000 kbps is the maximum for most Twitch streamers. If your upload is under 8 Mbps or you have connection instability, 720p60 at 4,000–4,500 kbps often looks sharper because the bitrate-per-pixel ratio is higher. Modern encoders (NVENC on RTX 4000+) make 1080p at 6,000 kbps look excellent.
Can Twitch stream at 1440p or 4K?
Only Twitch Partners with Enhanced Broadcasting enabled can stream at 1440p (up to 8,500 kbps). Standard Affiliates and non-Enhanced Partners are limited to 1080p max regardless of what resolution you set in OBS — the excess is discarded.
What size should I make my Twitch overlay?
Design overlays at 1920×1080 for a standard stream. Keep important elements (subscriber goals, timers, alerts) within roughly a 1400×800 central safe zone — Twitch's chat overlay and platform UI cover the far edges in some viewer configurations.
